Cultural Appreciation: An Activity that is Important to do with Children

Kamukoti has a very diverse environment; employees and children do come from different nationalities and cultures, and we all know that being in touch with our roots are very significant with every individual. Sharing and talking about it with friends is such an important and fun thing to do.

One activity that I love doing with children is showing different flags which represent the adults’, children’s and their parent’s country of origin. In the activity “Getting to know: Whose flag is this?”; flags will be shown one at a time and children will have to guess and think whose country’s flag it is. Then we will talk about how to say, “good morning” and “hello” in the country’s native language. We also discussed who are the children or adults who came from that country and have the language as their mother tongue. And the fun part of it is asking everyone who can speak the language and showcasing their talent and knowledge of it. It is so fun and exciting to see children speaking in a language other than Finnish and English in the daycare.

It is so heartwarming to see children getting happy and proud that they know many different languages and hearing them confidently speak the words that know. Also seeing the sparkle in the child’s eyes when their own native language has been spoken by their friends; you can really see the belongingness during this type of activity.

I am very happy to see and be working with people that even though we all came from different cultures and nationalities; the acceptance, love, care and friendship that we got just by being and coming to Kamu is really one of a kind.
